Tone Hulbækmo from Tolga has been active as a musician and composer throughout her musical life in Norway. She has distinguished herself with her distinctive singing and use of the unknown folk instrument medieval harp. She is known from several different genres from medieval music, ballads, folk music, world music and ethnic music to more contemporary music. Hulbækmo has toured in several countries, and has released a number of albums both as a solo artist and, among others, as a member of the group Kalenda Maya. Albums include Kåmmå no (1983; Spellemannprisen), Kalenda Maya (1985; Spellemannprisen), Svevende jord (1986), the children’s album Langt nord i skogen (1988: Spellemannprisen), Konkylie (1995) and Kyrja (1999).

Last year, Hulbækmo released the album “Harpedåm”, an album using only medieval harps – “As far as I know, the first album of its kind”, says Hulbækmo. Many people still do not know that a folk harp tradition has actually existed in Norway. Nine harps have been preserved, most of them from Østerdalen, the Fjellregion and the surrounding area, but also elsewhere in Trøndelag and in Sunnmøre. Sverre Jensen had made a copy of the harp from Selbu and that is the one Tone Hulbækmo plays to this day. There are descriptions of harp playing in the Nordøsterdalen from the first half of the 19th century, but the tradition was all but extinct by the middle of that century.
