Concert symposium

Hans P. Kjorstad is a fiddler and composer who operates at the intersection of the microtonal landscape of contemporary music, the rich tradition of Norwegian folk music, and the free exploration of experimental improvised music. With an impressive level of activity, Kjorstad has toured around 30 countries and contributed to as many releases through renowned record labels such as Leaving Records, Talik, Hubro, Motvind Records and Drag City. Now he is preparing the premiere of material from his first proper solo album, a work that distills his unique artistic vision.

Kjorstad’s main interest has increasingly turned towards the audiovisual, with a sensitivity to the sensory effects of subtle tonal changes. How do different tonalities affect what we see when we hear sound, and what do we hear when we see something? By discovering microtonal intervals and learning these from the theory of pure tuning – what musical processes and results will arise from developing a greater awareness of intonation as a core element? This is not just a technical exercise, but a philosophical approach to the innermost essence of music.

In line with these thoughts, Kjorstad will give a concert (weather permitting) outdoors at Okulus. The concert will be a new way to explore Okulus, for the first time in the dark. What does it do to the audience’s focus and collaborative imagination when the obvious is not in the spotlight, what does it do to the composer?

For Kjorstad, music is a space where one can feel free. His work invites a deeper listening and an expanded experience of what music can be – a mirror for our inner freedom and a catalyst for personal realization.
